生平
薛岳 1954年，10月4日出生於台北市內江街婦幼中心。上有兩位姐姐，為家中獨子，當時家住台北市信義路，父親為公務員，母親為家庭主婦。
1955年，1歲，長得白胖乖巧人見人愛，但只要一哭就會挨父親的打。
1956年，2歲，氣管敏感，常感冒。
1957年，3歲，家遷台北市長沙街，考入靜心幼稚園讀小班。
1958年，4歲，唸中班，喜歡唱遊課，參加全園唱歌比賽得了第一名，母親逢人就炫耀：「小岳會唱歌」！
1959年，5歲，入國小一年級，先在桃園借讀二週，然後轉學老松國小。
1960年，6歲，父親嚴格規定每晨五點鐘起床，練寫五十個字，因此一二年級時大楷都是班上寫得最好的。
1961年，7歲，自小是左撇子，但父母依傳統觀念要他「正規」地使用右手，因此挨了不少打。
1962年，8歲，三年級，人長得又白又瘦，頭倒大大，外號就叫大頭。
1963年，9歲，常穿黑夾克，面部輪廓愈來愈像混血兒。
1964年，10歲，父母在多年的意見不合後終於離婚。失去母親可以依靠，生活頓失重心。
1965年，11歲，父親再娶，家中添了一個小妹妹。
1966年，12歲，小學畢業，考上松山中學日間部。有一次因為成績單上有一科紅字，想到父親曾嚴厲警告而投奔生母，而在父親把人帶回後責打了一頓並要剪他的耳朵，以教訓他的背叛行為，大姐麗霞跪求父親剪她的耳朵代替，因而逃過浩劫，從此與大姐有更密切的親情。
1967年，13歲，母親將他接去住了年餘。愛上打籃球，入選校隊後衛；參加全校雙槓、單槓比賽，開展了人際關係，性情開朗起來。
1969年，15歲，與同學黃文奎、張衛禮氣味相投而結為好友。因為文奎的哥哥是學校的《鼓號樂隊》隊員，而由文奎學自哥哥的打鼓知識轉授給他，兩人常在大腿上練習打鼓。由於住處二樓住了一位合唱團的鼓手，每天在陽台練鼓，深深吸引了他，後來三樓又搬來一位合唱團主唱，受他們啟發不少。
1970年，16歲，考上崇右企專，因為父親帶後母出國的機會，隨姐妹們重回母親身邊過日子。其間認識一位學姊並墜入情網。

1971年，17歲，轉學入醒吾商專，由大姊介紹加入《陽光合唱團》打鼓。因為抽煙而遭生母第一次打。 白天上課，晚上在中泰賓館上班打鼓，下班後同夥伴吃喝玩樂，開始縱情菸酒。
1972年，18歲，每月可領三千元薪水，懷疑讀書是否有用，終於被留校查看。
1973年，19歲，辦理休學，入伍。入伍前，名主持人餘光在電視節目《青春旋律》中特別為他送行。 空軍三年，先編入台南防砲部隊，輪流負責伙食，學會做饅頭。
1974年，20歲，急性肺炎住院，期間與護士談戀愛，出院後，他調職台北藍天藝工隊，她調到台北空軍醫院，薛岳對這段感情十分在意，但不久便因第三者介入而失戀，萬念俱灰，企圖吞食安眠藥自殺獲救。在醫院裡醒來後了解人可以一夕之間如此絕情。 組織《搖滾城市合唱團》。
1975年，21歲，在藝工隊，常因不識譜而遭人恥笑，發憤學習五線譜，之後看譜、抄譜十分俐落，周末在美軍俱樂部打工。
1976年，22歲，退伍，當日戒菸，慶祝新生活開始，實則因為抽煙後歌喉會受影響。 次日便開始鼓手生涯，在「震撼」西餐廳上班，月薪一萬六千元。
1977年，23歲，開始在音樂上尋求突破，自組合唱團，向菲律賓歌手學唱歌，並在菲僑俱樂部打鼓唱歌。
1978年，24歲，鼓越打越好，場越跑越多。
1979年，25歲，認識一個女友交往了三年，結局仍是分手。
1980年，26歲，擔任崔苔菁《夜來香》電視節目專任鼓手，第一次接觸電視節目策畫，並由張剛賢處學會節目製作。
1981年，27歲，回俱樂部上班並由幕後走到幕前主唱，歌聲與演唱方式都受到鼓勵與肯定，信心大增。
1982年，28歲，唱歌興趣更濃，毅然於放棄月薪六萬元之打鼓工作，由李亞明介紹，決心向唱片界進攻。
1983年，29歲，加入高凌風舞台表演陣容，投入製作群，了解國語唱片市場，加盟拍譜唱片。偶爾在電視台上唱歌，早上九點通告，下午六點才輪到錄影，還要被主持人取笑奚落，無限辛酸，更使他發奮成功成名後才有路可走。
1984年，30歲，與拍譜唱片接觸一年半後，開始灌錄專輯《搖滾舞台》。製作過程中，罹患肺囊腫住宏恩醫院院一個月。出院續作時和製作單位意見溝通產生問題，然後又得肝病住院。因為情況混亂，情緒低落，全面封鎖消息，外界並不知肝病消息，出院病體未癒，在續作唱片，《搖滾舞台》出版時，人巳累垮，毫無體力上電視打歌，竟造成「歌紅人未紅」之怪現象。氣得天天喝酒澆愁，並出車禍，失望與挫敗使其曾認真地想退出唱歌的行列去工廠做事。

1985年，31歲，第二張專輯《天梯》發行，主打歌《機場》造成轟動！ 「薛岳」變成一個鍍了金的名字! 但是，肝病在酒與勞累之後復發，雖只入院一月，元氣卻大傷！身體極為虛弱，也了解了肝病的可怕，從此戒酒！
1986年，32歲，擔任《蘭陵劇坊》舞台劇《九歌》音樂設計並參與演出，在導演卓明的帶引下，驚見一個音樂之外的新世界。第三張專輯《不要在街上吻我》出版。肝病再犯，在家中休養。虛弱使個性急躁的他意志消沉，懷疑自己能不能再忍受「像個廢人一樣的躺著」！又一次想到「死亡」，念及母親，知道自己無權這麼做，他認真地看醫生、吃藥、靜養。身體漸趨穩定，參加卓明帶領的戲劇成長團體，開始與夥伴認識這個社會，了解自身並開始讀書，有計劃地到國外吸收音樂及表演的新知。11月15日，與幻眼合唱團及李亞明一起到東京新宿的《Live house「Freaks」》做兩場表演，演唱自己的作品及一首日文歌曲及英文歌曲，台下多為留學生及日本愛樂者，觀眾反應非常熱烈。
1987年，33歲，第四張專輯《情不自禁》由天狼星唱片製作，可登唱片出版。體力漸佳，開始進健身房，練出幾塊稜角分明的肌肉，十分得意。與李亞明合辦《燃燒的誘惑演唱會》。認識法國女友瑪麗，瑪麗教他許多東西，並一起欣賞爵士樂，雖然瑪麗最後仍回國，但他郤對這段戀情刻骨銘心。
1988年，34歲，開始擔任唱片製作人，製作伊能靜《19歲的最後一天》專輯。在新開播的中廣青春網主持《午安陽光》節目。
1989年，35歲，參與《讓世界都知道》合輯演出，並巡迴全台演唱34場。參與《民風樂府》訪美演唱會。參與《把愛找回來》活動。主持中廣青春網《新鮮派週日現場》。10月，赴大陸看唱片展，並與崔健暢談音樂，在大陸期間連連發燒，疑是感冒，在北京協和醫院看診，醫生用手觸診發現硬塊。回台北檢查肝功能仍為正常，在協議以超音波檢查後才發現肝腫瘤已7、8公分大。病中，仍製作郭子《純屬虛構》專輯。11月腫瘤已發展成11、12公分左右，敏感的他以話向醫生套出得知是肝癌的事實，緊鑼密鼓策畫第五張個人專輯《生老病死》。進榮民總醫院，於12月20日手術切除肝上壞細胞。手術期間，十數年從未聯繫的父親由媒體得知消息，在去榮總看並時順道探望薛岳。開刀後採用自然療法、素食、用多種偏方。
逝世
1990年，36歲 ，3月，考慮再三後仍隨《民風樂府》赴美國巡迴演唱，一路發燒，仍堅持完成全程。回國後檢查身體，醫生告知還有半年時間，與母親在各自房間哭泣。 8月，《生老病死》由新笛唱片錄製，可登唱片出版。唱片製作過程中，一天只能工作3小時，過時則會發燒，體力無法負荷。
9月17日，於國父紀念館舉辦《灼熱的生命演唱會》，全場爆滿並起立鼓掌3次，久久不歇。竭盡全力利用時間參與各種義演、公益活動。
10月7日，原訂由初中同學張衛禮陪同至大陸尋醫卻在六日晚間頭疼欲裂，急診後發現腦中有瘤，腦血管破裂而影響視力，住進榮總胃腸科122病房37床。
10月24日，自己已無體力梳頭，要求剪去蓄留多年的長髮，「不要再麻煩媽媽了!」
11月起，一天24小時皆在睡中，雖閉目，眼球仍有活動。
11月7日，下午2時零4分安詳逝世。
11月8日大斂。
11月13日在榮總懷遠堂舉行告別式，遺體在基隆火化。 骨灰厝台北市外雙溪雙溪公園旁之寺廟。
